About this role

The successful Environmental Engineer/Specialist is responsible for supporting the delivery of Environmental Permits, contributing to the development and maintenance of an Environmental Risk Register (including participating in required ENVIDs) and working with the project engineering teams and engineering contractors.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Support the preparation and delivery to gain regulatory acceptance of the Environment Plans (EPs) and Oil Pollution Emergency Plans (OPEPs);
  • Support the project team to develop the scope and review deliverables from the consultants/ contractors that are undertaking engineering design;
  • Manage consultants/contractors that are supporting the preparation of the required environmental approvals documents for the project;
  • Support the Project Environmental Lead to ensure contractor engineering designs have identified and considered environmental impacts and risks and are safe and environmentally compliant with relevant company, project, State and Commonwealth requirements;
  • Communicate the environmental and compliance risks and requirements for the project to other functional groups and contractors as required;
  • Identify environmental and social risks related to project activities, maintain a Risk Register and develop mitigation strategies that can reduce potential impacts and risks to ALARP and acceptable levels;
  • Support project activities to comply with corporate and business unit HSE requirements, including those to pass through the project phase gates from FEED through handover to Operations for commissioning and HSE deliverables and reporting;
  • Prepare and submit internal and external reports and related documentation, including formal presentations to upper management.

About you

  • Bachelor’s Degree in environmental engineering or science, biology, or related sciences;
  • 7-12 years approvals and permitting experience with emphasis on upstream exploration, development, production or abandonment operations;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Australian federal and state/territory environmental regulations & legislation including the Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 2006 and Environment Protection & Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and its application to oil & gas projects;
  • Experience in consultant/contractor management and contract development;
  • Demonstrated project management experience including Decision & Risk Analysis;
  • Strong leadership, organizational, & problem-solving skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to maintain and develop positive relations with both internal and external stakeholders;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team and with minimal supervision;
  • Previous experience with NOPSEMA, including the preparation of Environment Plans and Oil Pollution Emergency Plans.
