About this role

The Laboratory Technician position is located in the Lubricants Plant Laboratory and supports the operations of the Lubricants Plant, testing all incoming components needed to manufacture lubricants and all the finished products. Key Job Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

  • Performs routine physical, chemical and spectroscopic tests on finished lubricants, base oils and additives using ASTM methods;
  • Calibration of instruments to ensure equipment is within tolerance per ASTM;
  • Accurately records test results and verify them against method precision statements and product or component specification;
  • Receives and assists in obtaining representative samples from railcars, transport trucks, base oil and additive tanks, and finished product tanks for testing;
  • Prepares samples for shipping, making sure that samples are representative of quality required for each shipment;
  • Data entry of chemical and physical property into the Formulation and Blending System (FBS) and verification of formulas in GPIMS;
  • Analyzing and reporting results for round robin samples for lab proficiency testing;
  • Participate in or conduct Loss Prevention Observations and Loss Investigations on a monthly basis, adhering to scheduled deadline;
  • Leading and participating in NLI/LIs related to formulation or lab testing non-conformances;
  • Developing and maintaining Lab ISO and Process Safety procedures and work instructions, as well as training records;
  • Responsible for maintaining lab and break room cleanliness on a daily basis;
  • Performs other such work as requested by the Lab Supervisor.

About you

Required (Basic) Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience with application of Good Laboratory Practices and ISO Standards related to Quality Assurance.
  • Ability to work shift work;
  • Demonstrated computer literacy and ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel;
  • Ability to have successful working relationships with business partners, both internal and external;
  • Experience or aptitude for solving problems;
  • Ability to analyze and survey data to draw valid conclusions;
  • Ability to multi-task as well as the ability to organize and prioritize work;
  • Ability to operate with minimal supervision;
  • High commitment to safety and protecting the environment;
  • This is a safety sensitive position;
  • Resource will be testing lubricant products (such as based oils, finished products, additives), calibrating equipment, running standard daily. Will be interacting with operators of the facility, involved in production meetings. Will be on a team of 4 other lab techs;
  • Shift for this role will more than likely be 10am-6pm which is when all the tests are going on and will need to be completed for the next business day

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Analytical laboratory experience and familiarity with ASTM methods;
  • One or more years of college courses in chemistry, chemistry lab, or other scientific or technical field;
  • Bachelor’s degree in the Sciences preferred.
