Our client is currently seeking a Strategic Buyer who
will lead Category Management Teams (CMT’s) in the development of category
strategies for various category areas that lead to cost savings initiatives,
considering the Total Cost of Ownership across the client and develop
procurement-specific programs as a liaison between Technical Procurement and
the Business.

About this role

  • Develop enterprise-wide category strategies to achieve
    cost savings, value generation, and improve quality and service levels by
    identifying opportunity areas such as product standardization, supplier
    consolidation and leveraging opportunities;
  • Provide strategy development, negotiating and
    contracting leadership for business-strategic contracts (i.e., Engineering,
    Procurement and/or Construction Management, technology licenses, preferred
    service/labour contracts, non-disclosure, etc.) to support the business needs;
  • Develop the necessary competitive bid documents, through
    collaboration with the project and content experts in support of the agreed
    upon contracting strategies;
  • Oversee all spend activity and purchase requests for
    assigned category areas and determine proper action plan for all purchases that
    meet the procurement involvement threshold (e.g., strategically source,
    tactically source, user purchase, etc.);
  • Provide category procurement subject matter expertise to
    the associated business area and procurement buyers and seek out expertise from
    business/function when necessary;
  • Drive use of procurement best practices and
    standardization of procurement processes for managing the category;
  • Maintain a record of competitive market data, for the
    purpose of benchmarking and analysis, and develop a system for tracking and
    recording contractor performance;
  • Communicate any major market trends, risks and
    opportunities to key stakeholders and work collaboratively with the Project
    teams to develop mitigating solutions for identified project vulnerabilities
    associated with engineering and construction contractor market risks;
  • Effectively work with business groups as a trusted
    advisor to determine desired product/service specifications and projected
    demand when making recommended action plans;
  • Ensure that corporate has an excellent understanding of
    the supply market and works with the business/function teams to provide input
    for creating innovative win-win customer and supplier strategies;
  • Coordinate with Strategic Buyers to lead
    cross-functional teams to execute strategic sourcing projects for assigned
    category areas by assisting with sourcing strategy, negotiations, and supplier
    selection and overseeing project execution;
  • Execute Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) process
    including supplier stratification/classification, governance, performance
    management, and supplier development;
  • Lead major projects to improve supplier performance,
    innovation, value, and decreased costs;
  • Proactively identify supplier value generation
    opportunities for assigned category areas and recommend key actions to the
    appropriate stakeholders;
  • Lead the category management opportunities and
    improvements initiatives that maximize profitability and lead execution of the
    initiatives when necessary, while working with business groups in the
    development of sourcing strategies options and overall approach to the market;
  • Lead the Category Management Competency to effectively
    develop and execute category strategies to achieve World Class Performance in
    procurement practices.






























About you

The successful candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree in Science or Business (or a combination of education with a Professional Designation i.e., Certified Purchasing Manager, PMAC, SCM), with 10+ years of experience in the following areas: Strategic Sourcing/Procurement experience, Performance Measurement, Contract Negotiation, Project Management, Category Management, Business Analysis, and Change Management. It is important that the successful candidate has 8+ years of industry/category specific experience in one of the following categories: MRO, Capital Equipment, Professional Services, Construction, Facilities, etc. Additional required skills include:

  • First hand working knowledge of category management processes/execution and strategic sourcing methodology required;
  • Strong knowledge of strategic sourcing methodology with pragmatism to manage exceptions;
  • Demonstrate the ability to form effective relationship with key resources including Strategic Buyers and internal business stakeholders under challenging deadlines and market conditions;
  • Ability to develop category and sourcing strategies by identifying opportunity areas and value levers;
  • Track record of effectively directing and leveraging procurement spend in assigned category areas by leading enterprise wide cross-functional teams;
  • Experience managing and maintaining strong supplier relationships with a focus on safety and Responsible Care;
  • Strong leadership presence and negotiation/contract management experience;
  • Ability to coach and train other Procurement practitioners on application of strategic procurement techniques and processes;
  • Knowledge and experience with procurement/spend systems data and analysis;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft suite (Word, Excel, Outlook , SharePoint and PowerPoint), proficiency in Purchase-to-pay tools (e.g., SAP MM, Ariba);
  • An ability to execute job responsibilities during period of moderate travel. This position will require 15%-30% travel with possible extended stays.
